Energy Audits
While the whole
concept of the energy audit has many flaws, it is a popular and common
means to obtain information about your hotel's current energy
use, and a list of possible improvements.
Hotels and their
related facilities, with their 24/7
operating hours, and the inclusion of kitchens and sometimes full
laundries, are relatively high energy users.
The need to satisfy
guest expectations, the complicated relationship between the owner and
the operator, and way the hotel industry has traditionally allocated
accountability for energy consumption all add complexity to hotels' use
of energy.
Energy audit costs and benefits
If you are
considering commissioning an energy audit for your hotel, you may have
two questions in mind: what will be the costs, and what will be the
benefits. The answer, of course, is "that depends".
ERM's
unique and highly effective energy
audit process, initiated in 1992, allows hotel owners and operators to
understand and manage their energy consumption profile to a degree of
granularity and sophistication commensurate with the money being spent
on this particular resource.
For hotel owners and operators more comfortable with following a
standard format for their energy audit, ERM offers scopes of works to
match two popular formats:
The method prescribed in the 2004 ASHRAE publication
“Procedures for Commercial Building Energy Audits”.
The method prescribed in Australia/New Zealand Standard 3598:2000,
Energy Audits.

Other formats can
be matched upon request, and ERM is always willing to work with a
client to develop a custom-tailored scope of works to suit.
The key takeaway:
understand your energy
consumption profile.
The layers of technology, techniques, operating
practices, management decisions, financial influences, contractual
obligations, and other elements "cause" your current energy spend.
Develop a plan to optimize all of them. It takes time. But the results
can be stunning.
